Company overview. Macronix International Co., Ltd. (旺宏電子, often "Macronix") is a Taiwan-based memory semiconductor manufacturer founded in December 1989 in the Hsinchu Science Park, where it remains headquartered (No. 16, Li-Hsin Rd.). It is publicly listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE: 2337) since March 1995; it is not a subsidiary. Its own sustainability report lists roughly 5,530 employees, and FY2024 consolidated revenue was NT$25.9 billion (down from NT$27.6 billion in 2023), with an operating loss. It is not a US-listed company.
Products / operations. Macronix is an integrated device manufacturer (IDM) in non-volatile memory — it designs and fabricates its own products. Product lines per its 2024 annual/sustainability reporting: Flash memory (~71% of 2024 sales), including NOR Flash (serial and parallel, 512Kbit–2Gbit and above) and SLC NAND Flash; mask ROM and customized XtraROM (~21%); plus e.MMC solutions and wafer foundry services (~8%). End markets include consumer, computing/PC, communications, automotive, industrial/medical and networking. It operates one 8-inch fab (Fab 2) and one 12-inch fab (Fab 5), and reports holding over 9,000 international patents. It is a long-standing NOR Flash and ROM supplier rather than an NPE.
Litigation posture. Macronix is an active two-way litigant: three tracked cases as plaintiff and three as defendant, all involving memory-technology patents. It does not fit the NPE profile — it makes and sells the products at issue, and all tracked matters are competitor disputes. Venues are the US International Trade Commission, the PTAB and Germany, not the Eastern District of Texas.
Notable cases. The 2013–2015 cluster is the Spansion dispute: Spansion sued Macronix at the ITC (337-TA-910) and Macronix filed ITC complaints (337-TA-922, 337-TA-909), a German action, and Northern District of California claims; related PTAB proceedings in Tech Center 2800 also appear. The parties settled on January 22, 2015, with mutual cross-licenses and a cash payment to Macronix. In March 2017 Macronix filed ITC 337-TA-1046 against Toshiba over NAND flash patents; the Commission found a violation as to claim 6 of US 6,788,602 in October 2018, then rescinded the remedial orders after a license and settlement that resolved suits in the US, Taiwan and elsewhere.
