Toshiba America, Inc. (TAI) is the U.S. subsidiary and holding company of Tokyo-based Toshiba Corporation, incorporated in Delaware in 1965 to establish Toshiba's U.S. operations. Its listed U.S. address is 5241 California Avenue, Suite 200, Irvine, California. TAI's own website describes it as the holding company for several Toshiba operating companies serving the commercial, energy, and industrial sectors; a 2019 PTAB declaration by a Toshiba witness, however, described TAI itself as a Delaware holding company with no business operations of its own. Its parent, Toshiba Corporation, was taken private in a ¥2 trillion (≈$13.5 billion) buyout led by Japan Industrial Partners and was delisted from the Tokyo Stock Exchange in December 2023; Toshiba reported roughly 106,000 employees at that time. TAI is therefore a wholly owned subsidiary of a private Japanese parent, not itself a public company.
Operations. TAI is a pass-through holding entity; its subsidiaries conduct the group's U.S. business. These have included Toshiba America Electronic Components (semiconductors and electronic components), Toshiba America Information Systems (PCs and system solutions — the PC business was sold to Sharp in 2018), and Toshiba America Business Solutions (copiers, multifunction printers, toner). Toshiba Corporation's broader lines span power semiconductors, energy and nuclear systems, batteries, hard-disk drives, and digital services. Current U.S. subsidiary composition may have changed since the 2023 take-private; TAI's website lists a varying number of operating companies.
Litigation posture. The tracked data show TAI as a defendant in one case and a plaintiff in none — the profile of an operating-company subsidiary being attacked rather than a patent enforcer. The single tracked suit was filed in the District of Delaware, not a plaintiff-friendly Texas venue.
Notable case. Collabo Innovations, Inc. v. Toshiba Corporation et al. (D. Del., filed July 16, 2015) named TAI, Toshiba Corporation, and Toshiba America Electronic Components as defendants. Collabo Innovations is a subsidiary of WiLAN (now Quarterhill), which acquired roughly 900 Panasonic semiconductor patents in December 2013 and asserted CMOS image sensor patents. WiLAN announced on December 30, 2015 that a Collabo license agreement with Toshiba covering image sensing technology resolved the Delaware litigation.
