An open defense for patent defendants

For decades, patent assertion has run on an asymmetry: it costs a few hundred dollars to file an infringement complaint and millions to defend one. Most defendants settle — not because the patent is strong, but because fighting is more expensive than paying.

IHatePatentTrollsexists to shrink that asymmetry. We maintain a free, public database of patent litigation, PTAB challenges, and the entities that assert patents — and we publish AI-generated invalidity dossiers (prior art, obviousness analysis, derivative works, litigation history) for the patents being asserted, so the next defendant doesn’t have to start from scratch.

Everything here is built from public records: federal court filings via PACER and the RECAP archive on CourtListener, USPTO and PTAB proceedings data, and the public patent record itself. AI-generated analysis is always labeled as such — see the disclaimer in the footer of every page. None of it is legal advice.

How the dossiers are built

Patents enter the database automatically as they surface in the feeds we monitor — trial filings from the USPTO’s Patent Trial and Appeal Board and infringement suits from the federal court dockets on CourtListener. For each patent, a large language model assembles the dossier one section at a time — a plain-language claim summary, the litigation history, PTAB challenge outcomes, the USPTO assignment chain, and prior-art and obviousness analysis — grounded in live search against the primary record rather than a model’s memory. Sources are cited in the prose so you can follow each claim back to the filing it came from.

Every dossier is labeled AI-generated, and every page carries the disclaimer that none of it is legal advice. It is a starting point for a defendant or their counsel — the first draft of a defense, not a substitute for one. When the underlying record changes, the affected dossier is regenerated.
