Company overview. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC; Chinese: 台灣積體電路製造股份有限公司) is a public company founded in 1987 and headquartered at Hsinchu Science Park, No. 8, Li-Hsin Road 6, Hsinchu, Taiwan. It trades on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (2330) and, via ADSs, on the NYSE (TSM), and has no parent company. TSMC reported roughly 84,500–85,000 employees at end-2024 and consolidated FY2024 revenue of NT$2,894.3 billion (net income NT$1,173.3 billion); FY2025 revenue was NT$3,809.1 billion, about US$120 billion. Market capitalization was roughly US$1.8–2.0 trillion in 2025–26.
Operations. TSMC is a pure-play semiconductor foundry — it does not sell branded chips, but manufactures wafers to customer designs. It deployed 288 distinct process technologies in 2024, making 11,878 products for 522 customers. Offerings include leading-edge logic nodes (7nm/5nm/3nm and below), specialty processes (mixed-signal/RF, power IC/BCD, MEMS, GaN, display drivers, CMOS image sensors, embedded flash), advanced packaging (CoWoS, SoIC), mask making, design enablement (Open Innovation Platform), and testing. FY2025 revenue mix: about 58% high-performance computing, 29% smartphone, 5% IoT, 5% automotive.
Litigation posture. In the tracked data TSMC appears as a defendant only (zero plaintiff cases, one defendant case), in a single suit in the plaintiff-friendly Eastern District of Texas (Marshall Division). That pattern is consistent with an operating manufacturer being targeted rather than a patent assertion entity.
Notable case. Daedalus Prime LLC v. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. et al., No. 2:22-cv-00352 (E.D. Tex., filed Sept. 12, 2022), named TSMC and TSMC North America alongside Samsung. Daedalus Prime is a patent-assertion entity managed by monetization veteran Ed Gomez, which acquired an Intel portfolio of 250-plus U.S. assets in 2021–2023 and here asserted former Intel patents on processor power management and FinFET/semiconductor fabrication processes. Samsung settled and was dismissed in June 2023; parallel ITC investigation 337-TA-1336 was terminated in December 2023 after TSMC settled. TSMC separately sued Daedalus Prime and Intel in Delaware (C.A. No. 22-cv-1647) seeking a declaration that an Intel–TSMC LOT cross-license covered the asserted patents; that action is not reflected in the tracked case list.
