Company profile

Future Electronics, Inc. (commonly "Future Electronics") is a global distributor of electronic components founded in 1968 and headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, Canada (with corporate offices in Pointe-Claire/Kirkland, Quebec). It was a privately held company controlled by founder Robert Miller; in September 2023 WT Microelectronics agreed to acquire 100% of its shares for approximately US$3.8 billion, and the deal closed in April 2024. Future is now a WT Microelectronics company with dual headquarters in Montreal and Taipei. Public sources (WT Microelectronics' transaction materials and the company's own press releases) cite roughly 5,000–5,200 employees, about 159–170 offices in 44–47 countries, and revenue of approximately US$6.1 billion for fiscal 2022.

Future Electronics is an operating company, not a patent assertion entity. It distributes semiconductors and related components from third-party suppliers and provides value-added supply chain, engineering-design and demand-creation services to mass-market and mid-tier customers. Product categories include interconnect, passive and electromechanical (IP&E) components; analog and power devices; programmable logic (FPGAs); data converters, amplifiers, drivers, comparators, sensors and circuit-protection devices. Its end-market focus areas include automotive/transportation, industrial, communications, medical and automation.

Its patent-litigation posture is defensive: the tracked case data show 0 cases as plaintiff and 1 as defendant. It was named a defendant in Daedalus Prime LLC v. Arrow Electronics, Inc. et al., No. 1:22-cv-01107 (D. Del., filed August 23, 2022, Judge Richard G. Andrews). Daedalus Prime LLC is characterized as a non-practicing patent assertion entity; the suit asserted six patents (including U.S. 8,775,833 and 10,705,588) covering semiconductor and automotive-related technology. Co-defendants included Arrow, Avnet, Digi-Key, Mouser, Newark, Rochester Electronics, NXP, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz and Visteon. Parallel assertions were filed in the Eastern District of Texas and at the International Trade Commission (Inv. No. 337-TA-1332, "Certain Semiconductors and Devices..."). The Delaware action was terminated in March 2023.

Future Electronics does not appear to be an active patent plaintiff; its tracked litigation involvement reflects being swept into a broad NPE campaign against electronics distributors and their downstream customers.
