Firm overview
Tensegrity Law Group LLP is a highly regarded intellectual property litigation boutique with offices in Silicon Valley (Redwood Shores, CA) and the Washington, D.C. Metro area (McLean, VA). Established in 2011 by former Weil Gotshal & Manges partners, the firm is recognized by Chambers USA as a Spotlight firm for Intellectual Property in Silicon Valley, known for its expertise in complex technology cases. Vault also includes Tensegrity Law Group among its "Best IP Boutique Law Firms," highlighting its success in securing significant resolutions for clients.
The firm specializes in patent litigation across a broad range of sophisticated technologies, including life sciences, biotechnology, medical devices, mobile phones, computer and consumer electronics, networking, operating systems, database hardware and software, and Wi-Fi. Tensegrity Law Group demonstrates a strong preference for representing plaintiffs in patent enforcement and monetization matters, having appeared exclusively on the plaintiff side in all four of its tracked cases.
Tensegrity Law Group has secured notable outcomes for its clients. In 10x Genomics, Inc. et al. v. NanoString Technologies, Inc., the firm achieved a jury verdict in November 2023, awarding 10x Genomics $31 million for willful infringement of patents related to spatial biological analysis. This resulted in a permanent injunction in December 2024 and a global settlement in May 2025, where Bruker (NanoString's acquirer) paid $68 million plus ongoing royalties. The firm also represented 10x Genomics in 10x Genomics, Inc. et al. v. Vizgen, Inc., which led to a favorable global settlement in February 2025, including the dismissal of Vizgen's antitrust counterclaims. In May 2026, Tensegrity Law Group filed a new lawsuit on behalf of 10x Genomics against Element Biosciences, alleging infringement of next-generation sequencing technology patents. The firm also has experience in patent defense, having secured a jury verdict of non-infringement for Axonics against Medtronic in 2024 in a case where Medtronic sought up to $600 million in damages.
The firm also maintains an active PTAB practice. It represented 10x Genomics in an inter partes review (IPR) against NanoString Technologies, challenging patents related to spatial biology. These IPR proceedings terminated in May 2025 as part of the global settlement between the parties. Attorneys at the firm, such as Grace Gretes, have experience in post-grant proceedings. Key partners leading the firm's IP litigation practice include founding partners Matthew D. Powers, described as a "central figure" and "renowned for winning difficult cases," and Paul Ehrlich, a "cornerstone of the practice" with deep experience in high-stakes patent disputes. Other prominent partners include Li Shen and Kiley White, who have played significant roles in the firm's major cases.
