Matthew J. Powers

Matthew J. Powers is a highly experienced patent litigator and a founding partner of Tensegrity Law Group LLP, a boutique firm specializing in patent litigation trials, appeals, and counseling matters. Prior to co-founding Tensegrity in 2011, Mr. Powers was a managing partner at Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP. He maintains a balanced practice, representing both plaintiffs and defendants in complex intellectual property disputes, as evidenced by his roles as Lead Counsel for plaintiff MemoryWeb LLC v. Amazon.com, Inc. and Of Counsel for defendant Microsoft Corporation v. X1 Discovery, Inc.

His practice spans a wide array of sophisticated technologies, including computer hardware and software, operating systems and databases, networking, semiconductor devices, mobile phones and consumer electronics, medical devices, biotechnology, and Wi-Fi and location services. Mr. Powers is known for taking complex cases to trial and has achieved significant outcomes, including a jury verdict rejecting a $750 million infringement claim against Microsoft concerning Windows XP, a summary judgment dismissing a $500 million patent claim against Oracle, and a $465.4 million recovery for Lexar Media Inc. in a trade secret theft case against Toshiba Corp.. He has also led trial teams to secure billion-dollar verdicts and settlements for major companies.

Mr. Powers is active across various patent venues, including U.S. district courts and the International Trade Commission (ITC), and maintains a successful appellate practice before the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals. His firm also engages in proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), having represented clients such as 10X Genomics in inter partes review (IPR) challenges that resulted in global settlements. He earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1982 and is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the International Society of Barristers.
