Unified Patents — Patent Litigation Practice Summary

Firm overview. Unified Patents, LLC is a Washington, D.C.–based patent risk-mitigation and intelligence provider, not a traditional law firm. Founded in 2012 by Kevin Jakel and Shawn Ambwani, it operates as a membership organization (300+ members) headquartered at 1875 Connecticut Ave. NW, with a small in-house legal team (roughly 30–40 employees per business databases; no AmLaw or Chambers ranking applies because it is not a law firm). On August 4, 2026, it was acquired by Boston-based IP software company Anaqua; co-founders Jakel and Ambwani and COO/CLO Jonathan Stroud moved into Anaqua leadership roles. It employs USPTO-registered in-house counsel who appear as lead/backup counsel in its proceedings, typically alongside outside firms (e.g., Haynes and Boone, Finnegan, DLA Piper).

IP litigation specialty. Unified Patents' practice is validity-challenging rather than infringement litigation. It monitors patent assertion activity in defined "technology zones" and files post-grant challenges against patents it believes are low quality, targeting NPEs and standard-essential patent (SEP) holders. Its stated zones cover AI, cloud computing/storage, content delivery and streaming, electronic payments, cybersecurity, mobile communications, automotive, consumer electronics, medical devices, and semiconductors. The tracked case list reflects this breadth: semiconductor patents (Marlin Semiconductor, SK Hynix, Samsung Display, Advanced Integrated Circuit Process), content-delivery/decryption (Personalized Media Communications), software and telecom (Damaka, Secure Communication Technologies, LG Electronics, TOUTVIRTUAL), and even pharma (Actelion) and consumer products (Monahan Products/UPPAbaby).

Side preference. The tracked docket is overwhelmingly challenger-side: 40 of 42 appearances are as the named petitioner/plaintiff, with just 2 as defendant, and essentially all roles are in-house counsel on Unified's own proceedings. This reflects Unified's business model — it acts independently of its members as a third-party petitioner, so while its defensive mission protects operating companies from NPE assertions, it is nominally the petitioner in nearly every matter rather than a defense-side firm representing accused infringers.

Notable cases and outcomes. Its most prominent tracked matter is Unified Patents v. Personalized Media Communications (IPR2015-00520), challenging the NPE's content-encryption/decryption patents (which PMC had asserted against Amazon, among others). Publicly reported successes include Unified Patents v. Ortiz & Associates Consulting, where the PTAB invalidated the challenged claims and the Federal Circuit summarily affirmed in 2021, and Unified Patents v. Uniloc 2017 LLC (IPR2019-…, U.S. Patent 7,020,252), where the PTAB held all challenged claims unpatentable. Its independence model was litigated in the Dolby Laboratories dispute over real-party-in-interest disclosures, which the Federal Circuit dismissed for lack of standing and the Supreme Court declined to review in June 2026.

PTAB / IPR practice. PTAB work is the core of the practice. Unified states it has challenged more patents than all other third-party petitioners combined, and it also runs the PATROLL crowdsourced prior-art platform and a substantial ex parte reexamination program — in the first half of 2026, independent reporting (Harness IP) ranked it among the top three ex parte reexamination filers (25 requests), alongside Samsung and Apple.
