Interactive Brokers LLC (IB LLC) is the principal U.S. broker-dealer operating subsidiary of Interactive Brokers Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: IBKR), an automated electronic brokerage group founded in 1977 by Thomas Peterffy and headquartered in Greenwich, Connecticut. IB LLC was incorporated in 1993 as a U.S. broker-dealer; the parent group went public in 2007. Group-level disclosures put headcount around 3,200 and revenue near $10.4 billion (Fortune, FY2026). IB LLC is regulated by the SEC and CFTC and is an SIPC member.
Operations. IB LLC executes, clears and settles trades for institutional and individual customers across roughly 160 markets, covering stocks, options, futures, bonds, mutual funds and ETFs, and spot/leveraged forex. Its client base includes individual traders, hedge funds, registered investment advisers, introducing brokers and proprietary trading groups. Principal technology offerings include the Trader Workstation (TWS) platform, Client Portal, IBKR Mobile/GlobalTrader apps, and APIs for third-party integration, plus portfolio and risk analytics tools.
Litigation posture. This is an operating company defending itself, not a patent monetizer. Two tracked suits name it as defendant, both filed 2015-12-03 in the Eastern District of Texas, Tyler Division (a historically plaintiff-friendly venue): Chart Trading Development, LLC v. Interactive Brokers, LLC and the related Chart Trading Development, LLC v. NinjaTrader Group, LLC. The four plaintiff-side matters are defensive PTAB covered-business-method petitions (CBM2016-00038 and -00039, filed 2016-02-19) challenging the patents asserted against it.
Notable context. Chart Trading Development, LLC sued 32 defendants across four E.D. Tex. cases in December 2015, asserting five patents (including 7,113,190; 8,380,611; 7,890,416; 8,041,626; 8,060,435) on "systems and methods for providing a trading interface." Chart Trading's mandatory notices list BGC Partners, L.P., BGC Partners, Inc. and Cantor Fitzgerald, L.P. as real parties in interest; co-defendants characterized it as created to insulate a corporate owner from discovery. IB LLC's petitions were joined by parallel CQG filings (CBM2016-00046/47/48); final written decisions issued in 2017 and the Federal Circuit affirmed without opinion (Fed. Cir. R. 36) on 2018-12-17.
