Company profile

ATI Technologies ULC is the Canadian successor entity of ATI Technologies Inc., the semiconductor company founded in 1985 in Markham, Ontario (originally as Array Technology Inc.) and commonly known as ATI. It is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMD), which acquired ATI in October 2006 for roughly US$5.4–5.6 billion. ATI Technologies ULC operates from Markham (1 Commerce Valley Drive East) and holds a large patent portfolio (third-party trackers such as Patsnap and ipqwery list it with roughly 1,000–4,000+ patents, with AMD as parent). Third-party databases estimate ~3,300 employees, but standalone revenue is not publicly reported; at acquisition ATI reported ~2,700 employees and about C$2.0 billion in 2004 revenue.

Operations. Before and after the AMD acquisition, ATI designed (fabless) graphics processing units and related chipsets: the Radeon family of desktop and Mobility GPUs, the Imageon mobile/SoC graphics line, FireGL professional workstation cards, All-in-Wonder multimedia cards, and custom console GPUs (Nintendo GameCube/Wii and Microsoft Xbox 360). AMD folded ATI into its Graphics Product Group and retired the ATI brand in 2010, with products now sold under AMD/Radeon. Today ATI Technologies ULC functions primarily as an AMD intellectual-property holding and Canadian operating entity.

Patent-litigation posture. ATI Technologies ULC is an operating-company subsidiary appearing alongside parent AMD and fellow AMD subsidiary Xilinx. In the two tracked matters, it is effectively a defendant-side party: the IPR petition (Xilinx, Inc. et al. v. Sentient Sensors, LLC, PTAB, filed Feb. 2023) challenged U.S. Patent 6,938,177 owned by Sentient Sensors, and the Federal Circuit appeal (Sentient Sensors, LLC v. Xilinx, Inc. et al., No. 25-1058, filed Oct. 2024) was the patent owner's appeal of the PTAB's decision. Neither tracked case is in a plaintiff-friendly district venue; the underlying litigation was in the District of Delaware.

Notable context. The cases reflect an AMD-group defense against a patent-assertion entity: Sentient Sensors identified itself and Management Sciences Inc. as real parties in interest, and the asserted patent relates to multi-chip-module smart controllers. The Federal Circuit affirmed the PTAB's ruling via a nonprecedential Rule 36 judgment in April 2026.
