Company profile

Company overview. Qingdao Huatong State-Owned Capital Operation (Group) Co., Ltd. (青岛华通集团, commonly "Qingdao Huatong Group") is a wholly state-owned investment and capital-operation platform of the Qingdao Municipal Government, supervised by the Qingdao State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission. Founded in February 2008, it was renamed Qingdao Huatong State-owned Capital Investment and Operation Group Co., Ltd. in March 2022, with registered capital raised to RMB 5 billion. Headquartered in Qingdao, Shandong, the parent itself has a small staff (roughly 100–200 insured employees), but consolidates about 359 wholly-owned, controlled, and participating enterprises with 16,000+ employees and roughly RMB 23 billion in total assets (2020-era figures). Fitch rates it BBB (stable); Cbonds lists roughly USD 383–386 million of public debt.

Ownership and key asset. Huatong's most significant holding is Hisense Group Co., Ltd. — 100% of Hisense Group's state equity was transferred to Huatong in January 2021 as part of Hisense's mixed-ownership reform. Through that stake it sits atop the Hisense consumer-electronics and appliance business (Hisense Co., Ltd., Hisense Visual Technology, etc.).

Operations. It is a state-owned capital investment/operation company rather than a product maker. Its registered scope covers equity investment in modern manufacturing and services, industrial-park development and operation, property management, holding and operating state-owned equity, asset/debt restructuring, enterprise relocation and land development, financial advisory, and approved non-bank financial services — described by Fitch as managing and restructuring key Qingdao SOEs.

Patent-litigation posture. Huatong appears in two tracked U.S. cases, both as defendant (0 as plaintiff). Both are Flexiworld Technologies, Inc. v. Hisense Co., Ltd. et al., where Huatong was named alongside roughly a dozen Hisense group entities as the corporate parent. Flexiworld is a non-practicing entity (categorized as such by Stanford's NPE Litigation Database) asserting acquired patents on wireless content streaming and wireless device connectivity. The suits ran in parallel in the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division (filed June 24, 2022) and the Northern District of Georgia, Atlanta Division (filed October 31, 2022) — the E.D. Tex. filing reflecting that venue's plaintiff-friendliness.

Notable context. The complaints targeted Hisense smart TVs, soundbars, and the RemoteNow app, asserting patents including US 11,096,056 and US 7,609,402. Per PatSnap, both matters settled within roughly five months of filing, before claim construction or merits rulings. Huatong is thus an operating-company defendant — a parent holding group caught in NPE litigation aimed at its Hisense subsidiary's consumer products.
