Tariq Javed

Tariq Javed is an associate in Mayer Brown's Intellectual Property practice, based in Washington D.C.. He focuses on high-stakes patent litigation for leading technology companies, handling complex and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, electronics, telecommunications, software, semiconductors, smartphones, Wi-Fi, LTE/4G/5G, power management, user interfaces, and image processing. Javed's background includes a master's degree in Telecommunications and Network Engineering and prior experience as a senior engineer at Comcast, bringing a strong technical foundation to his legal practice.

In his patent litigation practice, Mr. Javed primarily represents defendants, with three out of his four tracked appearances on the defendant side. However, he also has experience representing patent owners as a plaintiff's attorney, as evidenced by his role in Maxell, Ltd. v. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. et al.. This case involved Maxell's allegations that Samsung infringed patents related to smartphone unlocking features, facial recognition, and video content management. While a jury initially awarded Maxell $112 million, finding willful infringement, the verdict was later overturned by the federal court, which granted Samsung's motion for judgment as a matter of law and found insufficient evidence to support infringement.

Mr. Javed has significant experience with Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) proceedings, having represented Maxell Ltd. as Patent Owner Attorney in cases such as Unified Patents v. Maxell Ltd. and Motorola Mobility LLC v. Maxell, Ltd.. In Motorola Mobility LLC v. Maxell, Ltd., the parties jointly requested termination of the inter partes review (IPR) due to a license agreement, highlighting his involvement in resolving disputes both in district court and before the PTAB. He also appears as counsel for the patent owner in another untitled case before the PTAB, and Maxell has been involved in multiple IPRs against companies like Samsung Electronics.

Mr. Javed earned his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, an M.S.E. in Telecommunications and Network Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, and a B.S.E. in Electrical Engineering from G.I.K. Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology. He is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and New York.
