Ryan W. O'Donnell

Ryan W. O'Donnell is a Shareholder and Chair of the Life Sciences practice group at Volpe Koenig, where he focuses on patent litigation, prosecution, and licensing. His technical emphasis primarily spans biotechnology, chemical, and mechanical technologies. Specific areas of his practice include pharmaceuticals, technology transfer, food wine and spirits, cannabis, image processing, and medical devices.

In patent litigation, Mr. O'Donnell primarily represents defendants, as indicated by his tracked appearances. He has served as lead counsel in an untitled defendant-side case and as Counsel for Patent Owner in Unified Patents, LLC v. Intellectual Ventures II LLC. Beyond these specific instances, his experience encompasses trial counsel roles in patent infringement disputes across U.S. Federal District Courts, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and Ninth Circuit, and before the International Trade Commission (ITC). He has also served as lead counsel at Markman claim construction hearings, securing favorable claim construction opinions.

Mr. O'Donnell has extensive experience with USPTO inter partes review (IPR) and reexamination proceedings, having represented clients in over a dozen IPRs and argued before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). For patent owners, he has achieved favorable outcomes, including the denial of IPR institution in full based on preliminary responses and institution on only a limited subset of claims. When representing petitioners, he has secured decisions for the cancellation of all claims challenged in an IPR and the majority of claims asserted in co-pending litigation.

Mr. O'Donnell earned his Juris Doctor from Temple University Beasley School of Law in 2002 and began practicing law that same year.
