Robert T. Haslam

Robert T. Haslam is a highly experienced patent litigator and Senior Counsel in Covington & Burling LLP's Silicon Valley office. His practice emphasizes trial work in patent and trade secret litigation, often involving high-technology disputes. Haslam's technical focus spans a broad range of areas, including semiconductor products and processes, cryptography, GPS and cellular technology, electronic circuits, microprocessors and software products, and medical devices and other life science products.

Haslam demonstrates a balanced practice, handling cases for both plaintiffs and defendants. Of the seven tracked appearances, three were on the plaintiff side and four on the defendant side, all while with Covington & Burling. His firm, Covington & Burling, is recognized for its strength in assisting technology companies with complex patent litigation, particularly in defending against infringement actions by patent assertion entities, and for its work in the life sciences and pharmaceutical sectors.

His career highlights include significant trial outcomes. He secured a $112 million jury verdict for Texas Instruments and Stanford University in a patent infringement case related to high-speed DSL modem technology. Haslam also represented Atmel Corporation, where a $36.5 million judgment for willful infringement concerning flash memory and EEPROMs was upheld on appeal. Additionally, he achieved a favorable jury verdict for SnapTrack and QUALCOMM in a patent infringement action involving GPS technology for 911 emergency services. He has also been involved in ITC Section 337 investigations, representing Altera in a case concerning programmable logic devices. Covington & Burling is also noted for its representations before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB).

Robert T. Haslam earned his J.D. from the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco, in 1976, and a B.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1968. He is admitted to the California Bar.
