Joshua J. Stowell

Joshua J. Stowell is a partner and co-chair of the Medical Device Litigation practice at Knobbe Martens, focusing on strategic patent litigation and arbitration. His practice primarily involves medical technologies, including cardiovascular devices such as thrombectomy systems, heart valves, and stents, as well as spinal treatments, respiratory devices, and patient monitors. Beyond medical devices, he also handles cases in electronics and semiconductors, software, information technology, chemicals, industrial materials, and oil and gas, leveraging his engineering background.

Stowell represents both plaintiffs and defendants in patent disputes. While his tracked appearances show a lean towards defendant-side work, his firm profile indicates significant experience enforcing patents for intellectual property owners, having recovered over $100 million in damages. He also aids defendants in securing complete victories through invalidation, non-infringement defenses, and fee recovery.

He is recognized for his experience in contentious proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), including inter partes reviews (IPRs) and post-grant reviews (PGRs), and has defended and challenged decisions before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Notable cases include defending Amazon.com in Vocalife v. Amazon.com, where a jury award was overturned on appeal, and Personalized Media Communications, LLC v. Amazon.com, resulting in the invalidation of asserted patents. He also played a role in successfully preserving Masimo Corporation's patents against Apple Inc. and contributed to Relievant Medsystems' $850 million acquisition. His work in Inari Medical, Inc. v. Imperative Care, Inc. involved parallel IPR proceedings, with a preliminary injunction motion against his client being denied due to questions of patent validity.
