Jonathan R. Carter

Jonathan R. Carter is a patent litigation partner at Perkins Coie, based in New York. He focuses his practice on intellectual property disputes in U.S. district courts, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. His technological expertise spans a wide range of areas, including wireless communications, computer architecture and software design, semiconductor design and fabrication, e-commerce, medical devices, and pharmaceuticals. Prior to his legal career, Carter worked as a processor design and verification engineer at IBM.

Carter frequently handles post-grant proceedings, including inter partes review (IPR), ex parte reexamination, and post-grant review, and is a member of the PTAB Bar Association. His experience in these forums includes serving as backup counsel for Amazon.com, Inc. in an IPR against Nokia Technologies Oy (IPR2024-00848), and for Hisense USA Corporation in another IPR also against Nokia Technologies Oy (IPR2025-01345).
