Jennifer Meyer Chagnon

Jennifer Meyer Chagnon is a patent litigation attorney at Sterne Kessler Goldstein & Fox, where her practice focuses on assisting clients with Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) challenges and developing litigation strategies. She also counsels clients on building strong patent portfolios.

With a strong focus on the defendant side, all five of her tracked appearances are defending operating companies. Her specialty areas, based on her case list, involve pharmaceutical and biotechnology patents, particularly related to hyaluronidase enzymes and subcutaneous drug delivery technology, as seen in the Unified Patents v. Halozyme Inc. and Merck Sharp & Dohme LLC v. Halozyme Inc. cases. Prior to joining Sterne Kessler in September 2022, Chagnon was a Lead Administrative Patent Judge (APJ) at the USPTO PTAB for nearly ten years, where she presided over more than 450 inter partes review (IPR) and post-grant review (PGR) proceedings. Her experience at the PTAB covered a diverse range of technology areas, including electrical, computer, chemical, mechanical, and biological arts. Before her judicial role, she practiced patent preparation and prosecution in areas such as semiconductor devices, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and digital image processing.

Her notable experience includes the ongoing Merck Sharp & Dohme LLC v. Halozyme Inc. litigation. In this dispute, Halozyme has asserted patents related to its MDASE subcutaneous delivery technology against Merck's Keytruda SC formulation. Recent PTAB decisions in related PGRs filed by Merck against Halozyme's MDASE patents have resulted in rulings that certain claims were unpatentable, with one core patent found invalid. These PTAB proceedings have led to a temporary suspension of related district court litigation. Chagnon is also an author on Sterne Kessler's "Federal Circuit IP Appeals" annual reports, summarizing key decisions.

Ms. Chagnon earned her J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law. She also holds an M.S. in Biotechnology from Johns Hopkins University and a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, magna cum laude, from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
