George Lombardi

George Lombardi is a highly experienced patent litigator and lead trial counsel at Winston & Strawn LLP, where he also serves as Chairman of the firm's intellectual property practice. He joined the firm in 1984 after law school and has remained there throughout his career. His practice spans a diverse array of technology areas, including biotechnology, particularly herbicide-resistant seed technology; pharmaceuticals, involving numerous top-selling drugs; medical devices and instruments; and telephone and computer technology.

Mr. Lombardi routinely represents operating companies as lead counsel in high-profile patent infringement cases. While the tracked CardWare Inc. v. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. case saw him represent the defendant, his work has also included significant plaintiff-side victories. Notably, he secured a $1 billion jury verdict for Monsanto Co. in Monsanto Co. v. E.I. duPont de Nemours & Co., a patent infringement suit concerning Roundup Ready® technology, which was recognized among the top verdicts of 2012. He has also achieved trial wins in complex pharmaceutical patent disputes, including a landmark case involving Baraclude® as the first ANDA case to find obviousness of a chemical compound patent, and the Prozac® case, famously dubbed the "Mother of All Patent Challenges."

In relation to the tracked CardWare Inc. v. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. case, while Mr. Lombardi was lead counsel for the defendant in the district court, a related Post-Grant Review (PGR2023-00012) initiated by Samsung against CardWare Inc. was filed at the PTAB. This PGR proceeding, which received an institution decision, was ultimately terminated as settled in November 2023. His professional profiles emphasize his extensive trial experience, and he has been recognized as an "Intellectual Property MVP" by Law360 and a "Litigator of the Year" by The American Lawyer.

Mr. Lombardi earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School in 1984, where he was a member of the Order of the Coif and the Michigan Law Review. He received his A.B., cum laude, from Dartmouth College in 1980 and is admitted to practice in Illinois.
