Barry Kenneth Shelton is a co-founder of Shelton Coburn LLP, a boutique intellectual property and technology law firm. His legal career began in 1999, following engineering and legal roles at Wireless Knowledge, a joint venture between Microsoft and Qualcomm. Prior to co-founding Shelton Coburn, he was a partner at several large international law firms, including Fish & Richardson P.C., Bracewell & Giuliani LLP (where he co-chaired IP Litigation), Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP, and Winston & Strawn LLP.
Mr. Shelton's patent litigation practice focuses on electrical engineering disciplines, including processor and computer architecture, software, networks and communication protocols, and semiconductors. He has appeared as lead counsel in notable defense-side cases for clients such as Dell Technologies Inc. and Deere & Co., and also represented Micro Focus International, PLC. With four defendant-side appearances and one plaintiff-side appearance in tracked cases, his practice primarily involves defending operating companies against patent infringement allegations. He has appeared for defendants in over 160 patent cases in the Waco division of the Western District of Texas, more than any other attorney in the United States.
Throughout his career, Mr. Shelton has handled hundreds of patent matters, trying cases in district courts across the U.S. and before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC). He has argued appeals before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and represented Microsoft Corporation in an ITC investigation concerning touch screen controllers. Mr. Shelton is admitted to the State Bar of California (1998) and licensed in Texas and Washington. He earned his J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law and holds B.S. and M.S. degrees. He is also a registered patent attorney and a retired Registered Professional Engineer in Electrical Engineering.
