Anupam Sharma

Anupam Sharma is a partner in the Intellectual Property Litigation practice group at Covington & Burling LLP, based in the firm's Palo Alto office. He specializes in patent and trade secret disputes, with a strong focus on high-technology areas. His practice encompasses a broad range of technologies, including semiconductor manufacturing, microprocessor and base-band processor design, digital integrated circuits, electronic design automation (EDA) software, 3D graphics processors, memory controllers, and the physical layer of the IEEE 802.11 (Wi-Fi) standard.

Sharma primarily represents defendants, consistently defending operating companies against patent infringement allegations. His experience includes representing major technology companies such as Cirrus Logic, GlobalFoundries, Texas Instruments, Altera Corporation, Silego Technology, and Xilinx. He has litigated in federal district courts nationwide and before the U.S. International Trade Commission.

A significant aspect of Sharma's practice involves proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). He notably co-led a Covington team that received a "Litigator of the Week shout-out" for successfully representing semiconductor companies Cirrus Logic and GlobalFoundries in seven inter partes review (IPR) proceedings initiated by non-practicing entity Greenthread. These IPRs resulted in the invalidation of every challenged claim across six Greenthread patents related to semiconductor devices with graded dopant regions. His IPR experience also includes representing petitioners like Texas Instruments.

Sharma was admitted to the State Bar of California on December 22, 2003, and maintains an active license. Prior to his legal career, he gained technical experience as an engineer for Mentor Graphics, Inc., developing electrical and physical synthesis software, and also worked in venture capital and investment banking focusing on the hardware and technical software sectors.
