Company overview. VideoLabs, Inc. (commonly "VideoLabs") is a privately held, venture-backed intellectual-property services company headquartered at 2100 Geng Road, Palo Alto, California. Founded in 2018, it is led by CEO Joe Chernesky and co-founders with backgrounds in patent licensing (Bill Goldman, Ira Blumberg). Sources report a very small headcount (roughly 9–15 employees) and a roughly $10M Series A (2019) backed by Bardin Hill Investment Partners, Soryn IP Group, and Halcyon. Revenue figures are not publicly disclosed.
Products / services / operations. VideoLabs describes itself as a "patent collective" and professional IP licensing platform rather than a maker of products. It aggregates and acquires high-tech patents — its initial portfolio originated from Nokia, Alcatel-Lucent, Siemens, Swisscom, 3Com, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise — and runs licensing programs in video, codec, streaming, and networking technology. Its stated model sells annual memberships giving licensees access to the pooled portfolio. In practice it operates as a non-practicing patent monetization entity; asserting patents is central to its business.
Patent-litigation posture. VideoLabs is a serial plaintiff-assertion entity: in the tracked data it appears solely as plaintiff (1 case, 0 as defendant), suing operating companies over acquired video/content-delivery patents. The tracked matter, VideoLabs v. Apple (N.D. Cal., filed 2023), asserted patents including U.S. 8,605,794 and 7,525,535 covering content synchronization and portable-terminal media delivery, and was dismissed with prejudice as to Apple. Public records show VideoLabs and affiliate VL Collective IP LLC have also sued Amazon, Netflix, Meta, Dell, Roku, Hisense, Acer, Lenovo, MSI, Asus, and HP, with many of those later cases filed in the Eastern District of Texas; it has also brought ITC proceedings.
Notable context. The Apple case is part of a wider assertion campaign against streaming and consumer-electronics companies. Several asserted patents have been invalidated at the PTAB — challenged by Netflix, Roku, Dell, and Unified Patents (which classified VideoLabs/its '794 patent within its "Video Codec Zone") — and in August 2026 the Federal Circuit affirmed the PTAB's invalidation of VideoLabs' U.S. 7,440,559 patent in VL Collective IP, LLC v. Netflix. VL Collective IP LLC, the affiliate holding many asserted patents, lists VL IP Holdings LLC as its corporate parent.
