Company profile

I'll research this company before writing the profile.

United HealthCare Services, Inc. ("UHS") is a Minnesota corporation incorporated in 1974 and a direct, wholly owned subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE: UNH). Its principal offices are at UnitedHealth Group Center, 9900 Bren Road East, Minnetonka, Minnesota. UHS does not report standalone headcount or revenue; its parent reported total 2024 revenues of $400.3 billion and roughly 390,000–400,000 employees.

Operations. UHS is an intermediate holding and management-services company, not an insurer trading under its own brand. Per regulatory filings, it "provides management services to health care companies and is widely licensed as a third party administrator and a utilization review agent." It sits atop much of the group's health-benefits and health-services structure: Optum, Inc. is a subsidiary of UHS, and through OptumRx Holdings it indirectly owns the Optum Rx pharmacy-benefit business. Its publicly named products and affiliates span the UnitedHealthcare benefits platform — medical, Medicare, Medicaid, dental, vision, disability, life, critical illness and accident plans administered through subsidiaries such as Specialty Benefits, LLC.

Patent-litigation posture. UHS is not a patent assertion entity. Its two tracked cases are both as plaintiff and both zero as defendant, and both entries actually reflect the same dispute. It is a large operating company that has used litigation reactively rather than as a licensing revenue model; it shows no pattern of NPE-style serial filing, and no cases in the Eastern District of Texas.

Notable cases. United HealthCare Services, Inc. v. Celgene Corporation (D. Minn., 0:20-cv-00686, filed March 5, 2020) is a civil antitrust action alleging Celgene monopolized Thalomid (thalidomide) and Revlimid (lenalidomide) markets through, among other conduct, fraudulently obtained patents, sham patent infringement suits against generic manufacturers, and misuse of FDA risk-distribution programs. The case was transferred to the District of New Jersey (2:20-cv-18531) in December 2020, where it was coordinated with substantially similar insurer lawsuits. Note that this is an antitrust matter, which is why it appears in drug-patent litigation databases rather than as a UHS patent-infringement suit.
