Company profile

Ormco Corporation — commonly "Ormco" — is a US orthodontic products manufacturer founded in 1960 and headquartered at 200 S. Kraemer Blvd., Brea, California. It has been a subsidiary of Envista Holdings Corporation (NYSE: NVST) since Envista was spun out of Danaher Corporation and taken public in 2019; before that, Ormco sat under Danaher via Sybron Dental Specialties (acquired 1988; Danaher acquired Sybron in 2006). Ormco is reported as part of Envista's Specialty Products & Technologies segment, which generated roughly $1.37 billion in 2018 sales; Ormco's own headcount and standalone revenue are not separately disclosed.

Products / operations. Ormco manufactures and sells orthodontic appliances and related digital treatment systems to orthodontists. Its lines include the Damon passive self-ligating bracket system (Damon Q2, Damon Ultima, Damon Clear2), twin and clear brackets (Symetri Clear, Titanium Orthos, Mini Diamond), archwires, tubes and bands, the Insignia digital bracket/archwire customization platform, the AOA orthodontic lab, and the Spark clear aligner system (launched 2018, US 510(k)-cleared). It is an operating company, not a patent-assertion entity.

Litigation posture. The database shows Ormco as plaintiff in both tracked matters and defendant in none — consistent with an operating company enforcing its own portfolio rather than an NPE or a target of NPE suits. Both tracked cases involve a single adversary, Align Technology, and its Invisalign clear-aligner system, with the district case in the Central District of California and the appeal at the Federal Circuit. No Eastern District of Texas activity appears.

Notable cases/context. Ormco Corp. v. Align Technology, Inc. (C.D. Cal., filed 2003) produced a multi-year patent dispute over digital orthodontic treatment patents (including the '444 patent), a 2005 judgment for Ormco, and Federal Circuit appeals (Ormco I, 463 F.3d 1299 (2006); 498 F.3d 1307 (2007)). The parties settled in August 2009: Align paid Ormco $13 million cash, granted Danaher an approximately 10% equity stake (valued near $77 million), and entered an exclusive collaboration combining Invisalign with Ormco's Insignia system.

Ormco Corporation v. Align Technology, Inc.

resolved
Docket:
03-cv-00016
Filed:
2003-01-06

Ormco sued Align Technology in the Central District of California for infringement of orthodontic patents; the Federal Circuit noted that U.S. 5,431,562 was a parent of the asserted patents but was not asserted in this suit. The asserted patents were the '444, '861, '243, and '432; after summary judgment, appeals, and a 2009 jury verdict on the '444 patent, the case ultimately resolved in Align's favor on the asserted Ormco claims.
