Ormco Corp.

Ormco Corporation (commonly "Ormco") is an orthodontic products company founded in 1960 by Frank Miller and headquartered in Brea, California. It is not an independent public company: Ormco is part of Envista Holdings Corporation (NYSE: NVST), the dental platform spun off from Danaher Corporation in 2019, where Ormco sits in Envista's Specialty Products & Technologies segment. Before that, Ormco was a division/subsidiary of Sybron Dental Specialties (NYSE: SYD), which Danaher acquired in 2006. Envista reported roughly 12,800 employees and about $2.5 billion in trailing revenue; Ormco-specific headcount and revenue are not separately disclosed.

Products / operations. Ormco manufactures and sells orthodontic appliances and related digital treatment-planning software to orthodontists globally. Product lines include twin and clear brackets (Symetri Clear, Titanium Orthos, Mini Diamond), passive self-ligating appliances (the Damon System, Damon Q2, Damon Clear, and Damon Ultima), the Insignia digital orthodontic system, archwires and auxiliary components, and the Spark Clear Aligner System with its Approver/TruGEN aligner material. Subsidiary Allesee Orthodontic Appliances (AOA) has also been involved in its litigation.

Patent-litigation posture. Ormco is an operating company and an active two-way litigant in a single long-running competitor dispute. The tracked data show one plaintiff case (Ormco Corp. et al. v. Align Technology, Inc., Federal Circuit, 2005) and one defendant case (Align Technology, Inc. v. Ormco Corp. et al., C.D. Cal., Orange County Division, 2003). Both are in the Central District of California / Federal Circuit, not plaintiff-friendly Texas venues—consistent with a genuine competitor fight rather than NPE assertion.

Notable cases. The dispute with Align Technology over clear-aligner and digital-dentistry patents ran from 2003 to 2009. Ormco's 2003 infringement suit (asserting patents including the '432, '243, '861 and '444 patents) produced summary judgments of non-infringement and invalidity, several Federal Circuit appeals (e.g., 463 F.3d 1299 (2006) and 498 F.3d 1307 (2007)), and an Ormco cert petition to the Supreme Court. A later jury verdict in Ormco's favor led to Align's 2009 settlement. The case data do not include subsequent Ormco litigation.
