Company profile

Mozido, Inc. (now Fintiv Inc.)

Company overview. Mozido, Inc. is a privately held financial-technology company headquartered in Austin, Texas. It was founded in 2008 by entrepreneur Michael Liberty as a mobile-payments startup, moved its headquarters from Dallas to Austin in 2012, and in late 2018 changed its legal name to Fintiv Inc. after rebranding its patent-enforcement strategy. At its peak the company reported roughly 250 employees and raised about $300 million from investors, including Wellington Management and Julian Robertson's funds; Forbes reported it was once valued at about $5.6 billion. No current revenue, headcount, or valuation figures are publicly available.

Products / operations. Mozido originally built a cloud-based, white-label mobile-commerce platform (its "MoTEAF" architecture) providing mobile payments, prepaid debit cards, and loyalty/marketing tools aimed at unbanked and underbanked consumers in the U.S., Latin America, the Caribbean, and Asia. It acquired Chinese payment processor PayEase in 2014 and sold it in 2018. After the name change to Fintiv, the company pivoted from operations to enforcing the patent portfolio it had accumulated, including patents acquired through its 2014 purchase of SK C&C's CorFire subsidiary in South Korea. Forbes and RPX describe Fintiv as a patent-monetization entity focused on licensing its mobile-wallet patents, though its chairman has said it continues to offer payments and loyalty products.

Patent-litigation posture. The case data shows Mozido as plaintiff in one tracked matter and never a defendant — a posture consistent with a non-practicing entity. Its litigation centers on a virtual-wallet/Apple Pay patent (U.S. Patent No. 8,706,125) it acquired from CorFire and asserted against Apple in the Western District of Texas in December 2018, three days after acquiring the patent rights.

Notable cases. The tracked case, Mozido, Inc. v. Apple Inc. (Fed. Cir. Nos. 24-1741, 24-1742), is an appeal of PTAB inter partes review decisions (IPR2022-01149/01150) invalidating its mobile-wallet claims; the Federal Circuit affirmed by Rule 36 judgment in December 2025 and February 2026. Fintiv has also sued PayPal over the same family of patents. The company's litigation spawned the PTAB's "Fintiv" discretionary-denial doctrine, and RPX reported in 2025 that Donald Trump Jr. acquired a 5% stake in Fintiv, which remains in an ongoing dispute with Apple.
