Company profile

Conformis, Inc. (formerly styled ConforMIS, Inc.) is a U.S. medical-device company founded in June 2004 and headquartered at 600 Technology Park Drive, Billerica, Massachusetts. It completed an IPO on Nasdaq in July 2015 under the ticker CFMS, then underwent a 1-for-25 reverse stock split in November 2022. On September 5, 2023, restor3d, Inc. (Durham, NC) completed its cash acquisition of Conformis at $2.27 per share, taking the company private; Conformis now operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of restor3d and its shares no longer trade. PitchBook and Gale list roughly 271–295 employees as of 2022, with product revenue in the tens of millions of dollars annually (restor3d cited about $60 million in Conformis revenue at the time of the deal).

Products / operations. Conformis is an operating company, not a shell or licensing vehicle. It uses its proprietary iFit Image-to-Implant technology platform — CT-based design algorithms, 3D printing, and just-in-time manufacturing — to make patient-specific and patient-matched joint replacement implants and single-use instrumentation. Product lines include the iTotal CR and iTotal PS total knee systems, iUni and iDuo partial/resurfacing knees, the Conformis Hip System and Cordera hip products, Identity Imprint, iJigs patient-specific instrumentation, and iView surgical planning, sold to hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, and surgeons through a direct sales force, independent representatives, and distributors in the U.S. and internationally.

Patent-litigation posture. The tracked data show 8 cases as plaintiff and 1 as defendant — the profile of an operating company asserting its own in-house portfolio against competitors rather than a non-practicing entity. Its suits target large orthopedic rivals: Zimmer Biomet, Smith & Nephew, Wright Medical, Stryker, Medacta, DePuy Synthes, Exactech, and Bodycad. Filings cluster in the District of Delaware, District of Massachusetts, and Middle District of Florida — not the plaintiff-friendly Eastern District of Texas.

Notable cases / context. The sole defensive matter is Zimmer US, Inc. et al. v. Conformis, Inc. (D. Del., 2019). Conformis's own campaigns produced licenses and settlements with Smith & Nephew (2018), Zimmer (2020), and Stryker (reported ~$15 million in 2021), plus earlier 2015 licenses to Wright Medical and MicroPort. The asserted patents center on patient-specific instrumentation and personalized implant design.
