Company profile

I'll research this company before writing the profile.

Volvo Cars of North America, Inc. / LLC ("VCNA") is the historical U.S. distribution and sales arm of the Volvo car business. Its principal office is One Volvo Drive, Rockleigh, New Jersey; corporate registrations in Florida and Kentucky list the "Volvo Cars of North America" entity at that address (some filings use LLC, the case data here uses Inc.). The U.S. distributor entity was formed in 2001. Its parent is Volvo Car Group (Volvo Car AB, Nasdaq Stockholm: VOLCAR B) of Gothenburg, Sweden, which has been controlled since 2010 by an affiliate of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group; Ford Motor Company owned the business from 2000 to 2010. Volvo Car Group reported 2024 revenue of SEK 400.2 billion and about 42,600 full-time employees globally; a 2015 court declaration put VCNA's U.S. headcount at roughly 275 people. Since January 1, 2016, day-to-day U.S. distribution has been handled by Volvo Car USA LLC, now headquartered in Mahwah, New Jersey, which also supports a manufacturing plant in Ridgeville, South Carolina.

Operations. VCNA/VCUSA purchases fully assembled Volvo vehicles from Volvo Car Corporation in Sweden and distributes them to U.S. dealers, along with parts, service, technology, and retailer training support. It is a sales, marketing, and distribution subsidiary, not a manufacturer or component designer: according to sworn company statements, it does not select or contract with parts suppliers and holds no records on component procurement or cost. U.S. sales ran roughly 50,000–70,000 vehicles per year in the 2010s, well under 1% of the U.S. light-vehicle market.

Litigation posture. Purely defensive. In the tracked data the company appears once, as a defendant and never as a plaintiff — consistent with an operating distributor named as a downstream defendant rather than a patent enforcer.

Notable case. Automotive Technologies International, Inc. v. Delphi Corp. et al., No. 2:08-cv-11048 (E.D. Mich., Judge Robert H. Cleland), filed March 2008 and closed March 2011, consolidated with No. 10-cv-10647. Volvo Cars of North America, Inc. was one of roughly thirteen defendants, alongside Delphi, General Motors, Ford, Hyundai, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz, Fuji Heavy Industries, and Motors Liquidation. ATI is a Delaware research/licensing company founded in 1988 by inventor David S. Breed that has asserted automotive safety patents — crash and side-impact sensing, occupant detection, seat weight measurement, vehicle diagnostics — against numerous automakers; Stanford's NPE database classifies its assertions as individual-inventor-started. The asserted patents in this matter included U.S. 6,833,516, 6,484,080, and 7,407,029. We do not characterize the merits of that litigation.

Automotive Technologies International, Inc. v. Delphi Corp. et al.

judgment; remanded for settlement
Docket:
2:08-cv-11048; 2:10-cv-10647
Patents:6850824

ATI's consolidated E.D. Mich. actions against Delphi and other automotive defendants were linked to the '824 patent. Judgment was adverse to ATI, and portions of the summary judgment were appealed and ultimately remanded for settlement.
