Sony Mobile Communications (USA), Inc.

Company overview. Sony Mobile Communications (USA), Inc. is a Delaware corporation and an indirect, wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Corporation (now Sony Group Corporation; TSE: 6758). It served as the U.S. sales and marketing arm of Sony's mobile phone business. Court filings give its principal place of business as 3333 Piedmont Road, Atlanta, Georgia; later Florida annual reports list San Diego, California addresses. The business traces to the Sony Ericsson joint venture formed October 1, 2001; Sony bought out Ericsson's 50% stake in February 2012 and renamed the unit Sony Mobile Communications. The parent does not break out this U.S. entity's standalone headcount or revenue. The global Sony Mobile unit reported roughly 4,800 employees (2018) and segment sales near ¥750 billion (FY2016).

Products / operations. Sony Mobile designed, marketed, and sold Xperia-brand smartphones, tablets, and related accessories, primarily a consumer (B2C) business. Sony reorganized its imaging, home entertainment, and mobile units into the Electronics Products & Solutions segment effective April 2019, and on April 1, 2021 merged Sony Mobile Communications into Sony Corporation, where it became the Mobile Communications Business Group; the separate legal entity was dissolved. The U.S. subsidiary is therefore a legacy operating entity, not a patent-holding shell.

Patent-litigation posture. Across the tracked data, the company appears in exactly one case — as a defendant, never as a plaintiff — the signature of an operating company being sued rather than a patent assertion entity. Its sole tracked matter was filed in the plaintiff-friendly U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division, before Judge Rodney Gilstrap.

Notable case. Raytheon Company v. Sony Kabushiki Kaisha et al. (2:15-cv-00342, filed March 6, 2015) named Sony Mobile Communications (USA) alongside Sony Corporation, Sony Electronics, Sony Semiconductor, Apple, and OmniVision as defendants. Raytheon asserted U.S. Patent No. 5,591,678, covering microelectronic device fabrication/three-dimensional multichip packaging. Sony and co-defendants filed inter partes reviews; the PTAB found the claims unpatentable, and the Federal Circuit affirmed in April 2018 (No. 17-1554). Raytheon is an operating aerospace/defense contractor, not an NPE, so this is operating-company-versus-operating-company litigation rather than a classic PAE suit.

Raytheon asserted the ’678 patent under 35 U.S.C. § 271(g) against Sony entities, Apple, and OmniVision. The case was stayed pending the IPRs and ultimately dismissed in the same 2018 joint-dismissal episode as the companion Samsung case.
