Fundamental Innovation Systems International LLC ("FISI") is a Delaware-formed (2015) patent-holding entity based in Flower Mound, Texas. Its parent is Fundamental Innovation Systems International Holdings LLC. FISI has no operations, products, or revenue-generating business; it is a licensing/assertion vehicle funded by the private-equity firm Centerbridge Partners (roughly $1.15B in AUM at the time of the relevant reports). Its managers as identified in press and Texas public records are former IPVALUE executives Kapu Kumar, Paul Seaman, and Paul Riley, along with Eugene Davis; the portfolio was initially licensed through TnT IP LLC.
Operations / portfolio. FISI acquired roughly 55 US patent assets plus foreign counterparts (Australia, Europe, Asia) from BlackBerry in a November 2015 transaction. The asserted portfolio — about 18 patents-in-campaign, largely the "Fischer" USB-adapter family and the "Veselic" charging/power-supply families — covers USB-based charging, battery charging, and power management for mobile devices, with priority dates in the early-to-mid 2000s. It manufactures nothing.
Litigation posture. FISI is a classic non-practicing entity: the case data shows 6 plaintiff suits and 4 defendant appearances, and every "defendant" entry is actually a PTAB inter partes review petition filed against FISI (Samsung, LG, Huawei, ZTE, TCT Mobile), not a district-court defense. It has filed roughly 20 infringement suits since late 2016, clustering in plaintiff-friendly venues — the Eastern District of Texas (Marshall, Judge Gilstrap), D. Del., and N.D. Tex.
Notable cases. Tracked plaintiff suits name Samsung, LG, ZTE, Coolpad, Lenovo, and TCT Mobile. Apple preemptively sued FISI for declaratory non-infringement in N.D. Cal. in February 2019, describing it as a patent assertion entity. FISI signed an RPX defensive-aggregation licensing deal in November 2019, and in March 2025 a Delaware jury found Anker Innovations infringed FISI patents, awarding over $13.6M.
