Conformis, Inc. (commonly ConforMIS; formerly NASDAQ: CFMS) is a Massachusetts medical device maker founded in June 2004 by Dr. Philipp Lang and headquartered at 600 Technology Park Drive, Billerica, MA. It IPO'd in July 2015 and remained publicly traded until restor3d, Inc. (Durham, NC) agreed on June 22, 2023 to acquire it for $2.27 per share in cash; the deal closed August 31, 2023. Conformis is now a wholly owned subsidiary of privately held restor3d and serves as its knee and hip implant product line. It reported roughly 295 employees at year-end 2022, about $62 million in total revenue for 2022, and an accumulated deficit of $603.9 million as of June 30, 2023.
Products/operations. Conformis develops and manufactures patient-specific ("personalized") knee and hip replacement implants and single-use, patient-specific instrumentation built on its iFit Image-to-Implant platform, which designs implants and iJigs instruments from a patient CT scan. Knee lines include iTotal CR, iTotal PS, iUni, iDuo, iTotal Identity and Identity Imprint; hip offerings include the Conformis Hip System (Cordera, Actera). Commercial programs include Image-to-Implant Platinum Services and Surgery-in-a-Box just-in-time sterile delivery. It has also earned royalty and licensing revenue from Wright Medical and MicroPort Orthopedics.
Litigation posture. Operating company defending against NPE suits. The tracked data show 1 case, 0 as plaintiff and 1 as defendant: Bonutti Skeletal Innovations LLC v. Conformis, No. 1:12-cv-01109-GMS (D. Del.), filed September 10, 2012, asserting U.S. Patent 7,806,896 on knee arthroplasty methods as part of a consolidated filing wave against Zimmer, Wright Medical and Smith & Nephew. Bonutti is a non-practicing entity affiliated with Acacia Research; the court cited Bonutti's NPE status when staying the case in April 2014 pending inter partes review, and the parties stipulated to dismissal in February 2015. Conformis also filed a declaratory judgment action against Acacia Research Group in the District of Massachusetts in 2013, and has separately asserted its own patents offensively (for example, against Medacta) outside this tracked database.
