Company profile

Cipla Limited

Company overview. Cipla Limited (styled "Cipla"; BSE: 500087, NSE: CIPLA) is an India-based pharmaceutical manufacturer founded in 1935 by Dr. K. A. Hamied and headquartered at Cipla House, Lower Parel, Mumbai. It is a publicly listed, independently owned company (no parent), with shares also traded as GDRs on the Luxembourg exchange. Its FY2024-25 consolidated revenue was about ₹27,548 crore (~US$3.2 billion), and its global workforce is roughly 30,000–31,000 according to the company's annual report and market data providers.

Products / services. Cipla develops, manufactures and markets generic and branded generic formulations, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), vaccines and metered-dose inhaler devices, spanning respiratory/asthma/COPD, oncology, HIV/AIDS, cardio-metabolic and diabetes, urology, CNS, anti-infectives, women's health and ophthalmology. Reporting segments are Pharmaceuticals and New Ventures, the latter covering consumer healthcare (Cipla Health), biosimilars and specialty. It is a leading respiratory player in India and a significant generic prescriber in North America and South Africa, and also sells APIs to third-party manufacturers.

Patent-litigation posture. This is an operating company, not an NPE. Across the four tracked cases it appears exclusively as a defendant (0 plaintiff, 0 defendant-side counterclaim posture tracked here), which is consistent with a generics manufacturer defending its Abbreviated New Drug Applications under the Hatch-Waxman framework. All tracked matters sit in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey — a common venue for ANDA litigation because branded manufacturers are often New Jersey-based — not in plaintiff-friendly venues such as the Eastern District of Texas.

Notable cases. The tracked suits are Celgene Corporation v. Cipla Limited (D.N.J., filed 2018-05-08 and 2019-07-03), which concerned Cipla's ANDA for generic lenalidomide (REVLIMID) and asserted Celgene patents on polymorphic forms and methods of use. Cipla announced in December 2020 that it had settled the litigation with Celgene (by then a Bristol Myers Squibb subsidiary) on a volume-limited licensed-entry basis. The same patents were litigated across numerous generic manufacturers and featured in later antitrust litigation over alleged pay-for-delay settlements; those allegations concern Celgene's conduct and are not adjudicated findings against Cipla.
