Walter Karl Renner

Walter Karl Renner is a highly experienced patent litigator and a recognized authority in post-grant proceedings, currently serving as the leader of Fish & Richardson's Post-Grant Practice and a member of the firm's management committee. His practice emphasizes client counseling, strategic patent prosecution, and contentious inter partes and ex parte post-grant and reissue work before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). He holds a technical focus spanning electrical, computer-related, physics, and mechanical arts.

Renner has provided direction for well over 900 America Invents Act (AIA) post-grant matters, representing both patent owners and challengers. He is particularly well-known for his PTAB expertise, having previously served as president of the PTAB Bar Association. His firm, Fish & Richardson, is consistently ranked among the most active at the PTAB, frequently acting on behalf of petitioners.

A notable case in his portfolio is Uber Technologies, Inc. v. X One, Inc., which involved GPS tracking patents for mobile devices. In this matter, Uber successfully secured a finding of non-infringement at the district court. Renner was also counsel for Uber in related inter partes review proceedings before the Federal Circuit, where the court reversed the PTAB's prior decision, finding X One's claims unpatentable as obvious.

Renner earned his J.D. from George Washington University Law School in 1998 and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland in 1992. He is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and has been recognized as "Patent Prosecutor of the Year" by the Bar Association of the District of Columbia.
