Shawn Chang

Shawn S. Chang is a patent litigation attorney at Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, with over a decade of experience in intellectual property law. His practice focuses on complex patent matters in U.S. district courts, post-grant proceedings at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

Mr. Chang's technical expertise spans electrical and computer technologies, including communications systems, wireless technologies, data and signal processing, optical systems, network authentication protocols, semiconductor devices, unmanned aerial systems, and mobile devices. His litigation experience includes conducting infringement and validity analyses, drafting motions, taking depositions, and working with experts. His tracked case appearance, Proxense, LLC v. Apple, aligns with these technology areas, where he represented the defendant Apple in a matter involving biometric authentication and wireless communication technology. A significant portion of Mr. Chang's practice involves PTAB and IPR proceedings. He has extensive experience challenging and defending patents in inter partes reviews (IPRs) and reexaminations before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), as well as in covered business method (CBM) patent reviews. He has successfully drafted both petitions to invalidate patents and responses to maintain patent validity. Notable PTAB experience includes representing petitioner Fidelity Information Services in successfully cancelling all claims of Mirror Imaging's patents in CBM reviews, and being part of the team representing Google as a petitioner in IPR proceedings. He also represented Apple in Federal Circuit appeals stemming from IPRs in the Proxense case.

Prior to his legal career, Mr. Chang served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable William S. Duffey, Jr. of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia from 2016–2017. He is a registered patent attorney with the USPTO.
