Shani Williams

Shani Williams is an intellectual property and patent trial litigation attorney at Russ August & Kabat, where her practice primarily focuses on patent litigation. Her experience includes representing plaintiffs in matters involving software and data compression technologies, as evidenced by her significant involvement in cases for Realtime Data, LLC, a patent assertion entity. Prior to joining Russ August & Kabat, Ms. Williams served as a law clerk for the Honorable Kenneth L. Ryskamp in the Southern District of Florida.

Ms. Williams's case work prominently features plaintiff-side representation, with all her tracked appearances being on behalf of plaintiffs. She has served as counsel and lead counsel in multiple patent infringement suits for Realtime Data, LLC, including Realtime Data, LLC v. Acronis, Realtime Data, LLC v. Carbonite, Inc. et al., and Realtime Data LLC v. Reduxio Systems, Inc. et al. These cases have often involved challenges to patent eligibility under 35 U.S.C. § 101, leading to Federal Circuit and Supreme Court reviews that have seen some Realtime Data patents dismissed or denied certiorari. In Realtime Data, LLC v. Carbonite, Inc. et al., claims were dismissed as moot after the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) deemed certain patents unpatentable.

Ms. Williams earned her Juris Doctor degree summa cum laude from Pepperdine University School of Law in 2010, where she was a member of the Order of the Coif. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, graduating with highest honors. She was admitted to the State Bar of California in December 2010.
