Russell J. Rigby

Russell J. Rigby is an in-house patent litigation attorney with significant experience in patent enforcement and post-grant proceedings, primarily representing patent owners. He currently serves as Chief Counsel, Litigation, at Intellectual Ventures, a firm known for patent monetization.

Mr. Rigby's practice areas are broad, reflecting the diverse patent portfolio of Intellectual Ventures. His work has encompassed technologies such as data caching mechanisms, cloud application management, wireless communication protocols, camera systems, memory management, and power control. More recently, he represented Intellectual Ventures II LLC in Tesla, Inc. v. Intellectual Ventures II LLC (IPR2025-00340), an informative decision where the PTAB Director denied institution due to the petitioner's inconsistent claim construction positions. He also represented Intellectual Ventures II LLC in Docker Inc. v. Intellectual Ventures II LLC (IPR2025-00840), where institution was discretionarily denied, and in Liberty Mutual v. Intellectual Ventures II LLC (IPR2025-00200, -00201, -00202), which settled prior to institution.

Mr. Rigby earned his J.D. from Washington and Lee University (1999-2002) and a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with a minor in Mathematics from Transylvania University (1994-1998). He is a registered Patent Attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and holds a Certified Licensing Professional (CLP) certification.
