Paul Margulies

Paul I. Margulies is an accomplished in-house counsel specializing in patent litigation, primarily defending Tesla, Inc. in high-stakes intellectual property disputes. His practice centers on advanced automotive technologies, including autonomous driving systems (Full Self-Driving, FSD), artificial intelligence for human perception and prediction, robotics, vehicle automation, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), and underlying technologies such as wireless communication protocols, camera systems, memory management, and power control.

With six tracked appearances, Mr. Margulies has consistently represented operating companies on the defendant side in patent infringement cases, appearing as in-house counsel or managing counsel for IP litigation for Tesla in five instances, and as plaintiff's counsel once, also for Tesla. His role involves managing litigation strategy against both practicing entities and non-practicing entities (NPEs/PAEs) like Intellectual Ventures LLC and Granite Vehicle Ventures LLC.

During his tenure at Tesla, Mr. Margulies has been involved in several notable cases. He defended Tesla in Perceptive Automata, LLC v. Tesla, Inc., a case concerning AI perception patents against Tesla's FSD technology, which ended in a voluntary dismissal without prejudice. In Granite Vehicle Ventures LLC v. Tesla, Inc., involving patents related to vehicle automation and ADAS, Tesla successfully obtained a transfer from the Eastern District of Texas to the Northern District of California. He also represented Tesla against Intellectual Ventures Management, LLC in a case asserting 12 patents covering diverse technologies, which was transferred to the Austin Division of the Western District of Texas with Judge Alan D. Albright retaining jurisdiction.
