Specialty & background
Naveen Modi is the Global Co-Chair of the Intellectual Property group at Paul Hastings, where his practice encompasses all aspects of high-stakes patent litigation, including U.S. district court and U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) proceedings, post-grant proceedings, and appeals. He handles a broad range of technologies, including electronics, software, business methods, medical devices, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology. Modi’s experience demonstrates a balanced approach to patent disputes, representing both companies asserting their intellectual property rights and those accused of infringement. His tracked cases reflect this, with appearances on both the plaintiff (9 cases) and defendant (5 cases) sides, often for major operating companies such as Apple, Google, Samsung, Hyundai, and Sonos.
Modi is widely recognized as a leading expert in Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) proceedings, having been involved in approximately 1,000 post-grant proceedings, including inter partes review (IPR) and post-grant review (PGR). He helped establish and served as past-president of the PTAB Bar Association. His PTAB experience includes notable victories for clients like BioNTech, where he led a team that invalidated Moderna patents related to COVID-19 vaccine technology, and for MSD (Merck & Co) in challenges concerning Keytruda patents. He was named "Practitioner of the Year – PTAB" at the Managing IP Americas Awards 2023.
His appellate experience is also extensive, having led over 100 appeals at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Law360 recognized him as an Intellectual Property MVP in 2019 for securing nine Federal Circuit wins, representing clients such as Google and Samsung. Prior to joining Paul Hastings, Modi was a partner at another international law firm and clerked for the Honorable Alvin Anthony Schall at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He also has in-house experience, having represented Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. in one tracked matter.
Modi earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from George Mason University School of Law in 2001, and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, with high distinction, from George Mason University in 1998. Before his legal career, he worked as an engineer for companies including Lockheed Martin Federal Systems, Raytheon Systems Company, and Hughes Aircraft.
