Michael Morin

Michael Morin is a highly regarded first-chair patent litigator and the Global Chair of Latham & Watkins' Intellectual Property Litigation Practice. He specializes in high-stakes intellectual property disputes, particularly within the life sciences sector, encompassing pharmaceuticals, biologics, and medical devices. His practice also extends to patent matters involving consumer products and software.

Throughout his career, Mr. Morin primarily represents defendant operating companies, from startups to global leaders, in their most critical intellectual property matters. His experience includes successfully defending prominent entities like Eli Lilly & Co., Sarepta Therapeutics, Abbott Laboratories, AbbVie, Stryker, Intellia Therapeutics, Adobe, and SAP.

Mr. Morin's notable achievements include securing a complete jury trial win for Sarepta Therapeutics in a patent dispute concerning Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy treatments, resulting in a $115 million judgment, and leading an Abbott Laboratories unit to victory in a patent suit against Dexcom Inc.. He also served as lead counsel for Janssen Biotech. Inc. and Genmab A/S in a defense win related to the blood cancer drug Darzalex, earning Litigator of the Week honors. His work for AbbVie on various innovative drugs has also resulted in multiple trial, arbitration, and appellate successes. He maintains an active appellate practice, having argued six times before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

He is actively involved in post-grant proceedings, serving as respondent counsel for Eli Lilly & Co. in an inter partes review (IPR) challenging a patent protecting the active ingredient tirzepatide (IPR2025-01024), which received a status of discretionary denial as of October 2025. He previously joined Latham & Watkins in 2015 from Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP. Mr. Morin earned his J.D., with honors and Order of the Coif, from George Washington University National Law Center and holds a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University.
