Matthew J. Moore

Matthew J. Moore is a highly experienced patent litigation attorney and former Global Chair of the Intellectual Property Litigation Practice and Technology Industry Group at Latham & Watkins. He represents leading companies in high-stakes patent disputes, drawing on a sophisticated technical background in semiconductors, electrical circuits, telecommunications, medical devices, software, optics, automotive technologies, materials, and chemicals. His practice primarily focuses on defending Fortune 100 and technology-forward companies, as evidenced by his three tracked defendant-side appearances and consistent representation of corporate clients.

Moore is recognized for his extensive trial and appellate experience, having litigated over 400 cases across the US, including before the International Trade Commission (ITC). His notable cases include successfully representing Capital One Financial Corporation against Intellectual Ventures I LLC, leading to the dismissal of infringement claims on patent eligibility grounds, which was affirmed by the Federal Circuit. He also served as lead counsel for Ford Motor Company in Ethanol Boosting Systems, LLC et al. v. Ford Motor Company, where the Federal Circuit affirmed the unpatentability of asserted automotive patents following successful inter partes reviews. Moore currently represents Paramount in a patent dispute initiated by Nokia Technologies Oy. He is noted for his "knack for invalidating patents" and has achieved significant wins, including five in a single day and three Federal Circuit victories in one week.

His practice includes significant experience with post-grant proceedings, regularly acting in Inter Partes Reviews (IPRs), as demonstrated by his work for Ford Motor Company. Moore holds a B.S.E.E. in Electrical Engineering from Syracuse University, an M.S. in Systems Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, a J.D. from Syracuse University College of Law, and an LL.M. in Intellectual Property and Antitrust Law from George Washington University Law School. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and several U.S. District Courts, as well as the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
