Mary Riolo

Mary Riolo is an intellectual property litigation attorney at Alston & Bird, where she focuses on complex patent disputes. Drawing on her background in electrical engineering, her practice areas frequently involve telecommunications, wireless and cellular connectivity technologies, mobile payments, digital subscriber line (DSL) technology, optical fiber communications, and general software and security matters.

Riolo has represented both patent owners and defendants in her practice. Her work includes representing Telcom Ventures LLC as a plaintiff in infringement actions against major technology companies. Specifically, she was counsel for Telcom Ventures LLC in patent infringement suits against Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and Samsung Electronics America, Inc. concerning mobile payment technologies, including biometric authentication, near-field communication (NFC), and magnetic secure transmission (MST). She also represented Telcom Ventures LLC in a patent infringement case against Apple Inc., asserting eight wireless and cellular connectivity patents, which was transferred from the Southern District of Florida to the Northern District of California in June 2025. Additionally, Riolo has represented clients as defendants in district court litigation, including a national network infrastructure manufacturer in a DSL technology dispute and a global telecommunications company in a case involving optical fiber communications technology.

Her experience also extends to post-grant proceedings, with her client Telcom Ventures LLC being the patent owner in an IPR proceeding initiated by Google LLC in August 2025. Riolo is admitted to practice in North Carolina. She earned her J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of South Carolina in 2022, following a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, cum laude, from the same institution in 2019.
