Lauren A. Degnan

Lauren A. Degnan is a highly experienced patent litigator with a focus on complex, high-stakes intellectual property disputes, particularly in trial and appellate matters. As a Principal and co-leader of the Appellate Group at Fish & Richardson in Washington, D.C., she guides strategy in multi-jurisdictional cases. She previously served as Counsel at Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, where she represented Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. as plaintiff in a case against Samsung Bioepis Co., Ltd.

Her practice encompasses a broad range of technology and medical device sectors, including computer software and hardware, telecommunications, lithium-ion batteries, medical devices, and various mechanical inventions. Ms. Degnan's experience reflects a balanced practice, having represented both plaintiff and defendant clients in patent infringement matters, as evidenced by her role in the Regeneron v. Samsung Bioepis case as plaintiff's counsel and an untracked defense-side appearance. She is known for handling contentious competitor-to-competitor disputes for clients ranging from startups to industry giants.

Ms. Degnan possesses extensive experience before U.S. district courts, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), regularly appearing in these forums. She has argued over 25 cases before the Federal Circuit, including numerous inter partes review (IPR) appeals, some of which resulted in the vacating of PTAB decisions. Her significant case work includes representing LG Chem and LG Energy Solution in patent disputes involving lithium-ion battery technology, which concluded in favorable settlements, and her strategic involvement in a multi-billion-dollar patent-related antitrust and commercial litigation against Qualcomm for a Fortune 10 consumer electronics company. Noteworthy appellate successes include overturning a $200 million jury verdict for a pharmaceutical client and securing a $14 million attorney's fee award, as well as obtaining the reinstatement of a $23.7 million enhanced damages award in a cybersecurity patent infringement case, bringing the total judgment to $57 million.

Ms. Degnan earned her J.D., Order of the Coif, from Vanderbilt University Law School in 1995 and clerked for the Honorable Haldane Robert Mayer at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit from 1997-1999. She is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (1997), the District of Columbia Bar (1996), and the Massachusetts Bar (1996).
