Laura Vu

Laura Vu is a patent litigation attorney at Haynes Boone, focusing her practice on federal district court litigation, appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and post-grant proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTAB). Her technical expertise spans a wide array of technologies, including electric vehicle charging, medical devices, wireless communication, sensor and alarm systems, RFID tracking, electronic messaging, and antivirus software. Prior to private practice, Ms. Vu served as a law clerk to Judge Raymond T. Chen of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, and spent nearly eight years as a patent examiner at the USPTO.

Ms. Vu primarily represents defendants in patent disputes, with a strong emphasis on defending operating companies against patent assertions. Her tracked case appearances show four instances on the defendant side and one on the plaintiff side. She has represented Apple Inc. in Federal Circuit appeals arising from inter partes review (IPR) proceedings against Smart Mobile Technologies LLC, where the Federal Circuit affirmed the unpatentability of certain wireless and networking patents. She also handled Federal Circuit argument for Unified Patents in a case where a power management patent was affirmed invalid. Additionally, she was involved in representing Western Digital Corp. in a Federal Circuit appeal concerning supply voltage generating circuit technology, which was voluntarily dismissed.

Her practice includes significant experience with PTAB proceedings, representing both petitioners and patent owners in IPRs and drafting briefing at all stages. She has been involved in PTAB matters concerning technologies like geo-temporal data systems and has co-authored publications on the evolving contours of prior art in IPR proceedings.

Ms. Vu earned her J.D., magna cum laude, from Fordham University School of Law in 2019, and holds both an M.S. (2011) and B.S. (2009, highest honors) in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. She is admitted to practice in California.
