Joshua L. Goldberg

Joshua L. Goldberg is a Partner at Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, where he focuses significantly on patent litigation and post-grant proceedings. He is particularly recognized for his extensive practice before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), having served as lead or backup counsel in over 350 inter partes reviews (IPRs), covered business method (CBM) reviews, and post-grant reviews (PGRs), as well as ensuing appeals to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. His PTAB experience is balanced, with his time split approximately 60/40 between representing petitioners and patent owners. Goldberg also complements his PTAB practice with litigation in U.S. district courts and provides counseling on patent infringement, validity, and global patent portfolio strategies.

His technical expertise spans a broad range of areas, including display, graphical user interface, telecommunications (4G/5G), consumer electronics, software, cloud computing, image processing, mobile applications, semiconductors, electronic banking, internet, storage, integrated circuits, mechanical, industrial manufacturing, automotive, chemical, and medical device technologies. He has also managed patent prosecution for drug delivery products and advised on patent drafting best practices for a Fortune 100 consumer electronics company. His experience includes a period as in-house counsel for Google LLC, where he appeared in Google LLC v. Headwater Research LLC.

Goldberg's PTAB experience is further highlighted by his role as Vice President of the PTAB Bar Association and as a co-editor of "The Practitioner's Guide to Trials Before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board." A notable success includes his representation of DJI at the PTAB, which resulted in the cancellation of 76 claims related to unmanned aerial vehicles and the dismissal of a connected infringement lawsuit. Other tracked cases include representing Tianma Microelectronics Co., Ltd. as lead counsel and serving as Of Counsel for Toyota Motor North America, Inc.

He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, in the District of Columbia and Virginia, and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Goldberg earned his J.D., cum laude, from George Mason University School of Law in 2009, and a B.A. in Physics from Drake University in 2006.
