Joel Chao-Iee Lin

Joel Chao-Iee Lin is a patent litigation attorney with extensive experience defending technology companies in high-stakes disputes, primarily in federal district courts, the International Trade Commission (ITC), and before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). His practice focuses on a broad range of technologies, including semiconductor fabrication, circuit design, signal processing, wireless/cellular standards (such as Wi-Fi), image detection, video streaming, software security, and chemical mechanical polishing. Before entering law, he worked as a support and software engineer in the mobile, aerospace, and semiconductor industries, which underpins his strong technical acumen.

Mr. Lin primarily represents defendants in patent litigation, consistently defending operating companies against infringement claims. His tracked appearances reflect this, showing two defendant-side roles at DLA Piper. While at DLA Piper, he defended clients such as Apple Inc. in Smart Mobile Technologies LLC v. Apple Inc.. He has also represented other major technology companies including Samsung, Nvidia, AMD, Lenovo/Motorola, Walmart, and Medtronic in various patent disputes. Prior to his tenure at DLA Piper (March 2017 to January 2024), he was an associate at Paul Hastings LLP for over five years, and since January 2024, he has been a Partner at Gish PLLC.

In terms of notable outcomes, Mr. Lin was involved in Smart Mobile Technologies LLC v. Apple Inc., where the Federal Circuit affirmed the invalidity of U.S. Patent No. 9,614,943, a patent related to interfacing IP-based wireless devices with subtasks and channels. He also played a key role in claim construction efforts for Samsung in a patent litigation concerning semiconductor fabrication processes, securing a favorable claim construction order on all terms. His experience extends to the ITC, where he acted as the technical lead defending Lenovo/Motorola against a patent related to cellular standards, which settled on the eve of trial, and developed technical defenses for Toshiba in a patent related to chemical mechanical polishing, resulting in a non-infringement ruling.

Mr. Lin possesses significant experience with PTAB proceedings, including Inter Partes Review (IPR). He prepared an IPR petition that led to the invalidation of all but one challenged claim in a case involving circuit design for Samsung. He earned his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 2011 and holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering Computer Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley (2005). He is admitted to the State Bar of New York and is also a member of the State Bar of California.
