James Miller

James Miller is a patent litigation attorney at Perkins Coie, where his practice encompasses a broad range of technologies. His expertise includes industrial chemicals, software, networking technologies, mechanical and electrical devices, and biotechnology. Miller has extensive experience representing clients in litigation before U.S. district courts, as well as in inter partes review (IPR) proceedings before the U.S. Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) and the International Trade Commission (ITC). He also handles arbitrations related to breach of contract, trade secrets, and intellectual property disputes.

Miller primarily defends operating companies in significant patent infringement cases across federal courts nationwide. He was lead counsel for BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd. in the case Longitude Licensing Limited et al. v. BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd. et al. This case, tried in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, involved patents related to liquid crystal display (LCD) technology, specifically structural optimizations in LCD pixel arrays and protective circuitry in semiconductor display devices. A jury found BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd. willfully infringed three patents and awarded the plaintiffs $66.9 million in damages.

He earned his J.D. with honors from the University of Washington School of Law in 2017, where he served as Managing Editor of the Washington Law Review. Prior to law school, he obtained a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Washington in 2014. Miller's early experience includes an internship at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, where he examined patents in the chemistry art unit. He is admitted to practice in Washington and California.
