Jacob Adam Schroeder

Jacob Adam Schroeder is a first-chair trial attorney and partner at Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, specializing in high-stakes patent and trade secret litigation, including appeals. His practice spans a diverse array of technologies, notably computers, electronics, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and software, with a particular focus on areas such as voice recognition, drone technology, and mobile communication systems. Before his legal career, he worked as a software engineer at Cisco Systems, Inc., developing voice, video, and web-conferencing software components, which provides him with distinct technical insights.

Mr. Schroeder has experience representing both plaintiffs and defendants in patent disputes. While the tracked case, Uber Technologies, Inc. v. X One, Inc., shows him representing the defendant X One, Inc., his broader practice includes significant plaintiff-side victories. Most notably, he led the trial team that secured a $240 million jury verdict for Promptu Systems Corporation against Comcast Corporation in January 2026, concerning voice recognition technology. He has also successfully defended clients such as DJI in drone technology litigation, achieving favorable resolutions including the exclusion of a damages expert's report and voluntary dismissals. Other notable representations include BMW in patent litigation involving processor technology and Google in multi-forum litigation concerning smart speaker technology.

His practice frequently involves proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). In the Promptu v. Comcast case, Finnegan, with Mr. Schroeder involved, successfully defended against eight PTAB petitions (six IPRs and two CBMs) filed by Comcast. He has also represented clients such as FlatFrog Laboratories AB in defending against IPR petitions and Intuitive Surgical Operations on IPR appeals.

Mr. Schroeder earned his J.D., with highest honors, from George Washington University Law School in 2009, and a B.S. in Computer Engineering, with distinction, from Purdue University in 2005. He is admitted to practice in California and the District of Columbia, as well as before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and several U.S. District Courts. He previously clerked for the Honorable Richard Linn at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the Honorable Lucy H. Koh at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
