Eric S. Hansen

Eric S. Hansen is a Principal in the Dallas office of McKool Smith, where his practice focuses on patent litigation across a broad range of technologies. He handles cases spanning the chemical, electrical, and mechanical arts. His experience includes matters involving power distribution, semiconductor manufacturing, WCDMA, LTE, and 802.11 (Wi-Fi) technology, as well as wireless charging, computer memory, and communications systems for modern computers and wireless devices.

Hansen maintains a balanced practice, representing both plaintiffs and defendants in patent disputes. While tracked appearances show he has represented defendants in two cases and plaintiffs in one, his firm's broader patent litigation practice also actively serves both sides. Notable cases include representing Nokia Technologies Oy as lead counsel in a plaintiff-side patent dispute against Acer Inc. and as counsel on the defendant side in Nokia Technologies Oy v. Hisense Co., Ltd. et al. He also successfully secured a patent defense verdict for T-Mobile in a dispute concerning a 5G telecommunications patent.

He is actively involved in proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), where his practice encompasses Inter Partes Review (IPR) disputes. For example, he represented Nokia Technologies Oy as Patent Owner in IPR proceedings (IPR2025-01345 and IPR2025-01375) initiated by Snap Inc. and Hisense USA Corporation, which ultimately terminated upon settlement.

Hansen earned his J.D. from Northwestern University Law School in 2007. He holds an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Dallas (2010) and dual B.S. degrees in Materials Science and Engineering and Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2003). He is admitted to the State Bar of Texas and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.
