David M. O'Dell

David M. O'Dell is a Partner and Chair of the Patent Trials and Counseling Practice Group at Haynes and Boone, LLP. His practice primarily focuses on patent matters, drawing on extensive technical expertise in semiconductor processing, circuit design, computer software and hardware, and telecommunications. This background stems from his prior career as a professional engineer, where he worked as a computer memory designer, semiconductor product engineer, and computer programmer.

In patent litigation, O'Dell has appeared as lead counsel and counsel in district court cases on the plaintiff side, such as in Kubota North America Corporation et al. v. Vermeer Manufacturing Co., which involves patent infringement claims related to industrial equipment like stand-on compact loaders. Concurrently, he possesses a substantial PTAB practice, where he is noted as one of the most prolific attorneys representing IPR petitioners, having filed over 150 petitions with an institution rate exceeding 90%. Mr. O'Dell earned his J.D. from Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law in 1995 and holds an Electrical Engineering degree from The University of Texas at Austin, received in 1987. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas.
