Colin B. Heideman

Colin B. Heideman is a highly experienced patent litigator, currently a Partner in the Seattle office of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius. His practice focuses on representing technology and medical device companies in complex, high-stakes intellectual property disputes in U.S. district courts, before the Federal Circuit, and at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). He possesses deep technical knowledge in areas such as software, hardware, algorithmic innovations, cloud computing, e-commerce, and conversational AI. Throughout his career, Mr. Heideman has served as lead counsel in numerous significant patent cases. This includes representing Amazon in various patent disputes. For instance, in Amazon.com, Inc. et al. v. VB Assets, LLC, where he served as Lead Counsel at Knobbe Martens, Amazon was ultimately ordered by a Delaware jury to pay VB Assets $46.7 million for willful infringement of four patents related to its Alexa products in November 2023. The Federal Circuit later dismissed Amazon's appeal for lack of jurisdiction in March 2025. While the tracked case Amazon Web Services Inc. et al. v. Headwater Research LLC lists his involvement as lead counsel at Morgan Lewis, related litigation saw a federal jury in Chicago award $525 million in damages to Headwater Research LLC (or its related entity) against Amazon Web Services for patent infringement in April 2024. His experience also includes successfully representing Amazon in IPR proceedings where the PTAB invalidated claims related to video annotation playback, a decision later affirmed by the Federal Circuit, and securing summary judgment of invalidity in patent litigation concerning natural language processing, also affirmed on appeal.

Heideman is also highly active in U.S. Patent Office Post-Grant Proceedings, having successfully guided clients through dozens of inter partes review (IPR) proceedings as lead counsel. He was recognized for his performance before the PTAB in Patexia's 2023 PTAB Intelligence Report. Mr. Heideman earned his J.D. from Vanderbilt University Law School in 2005, where he was an associate editor of the Vanderbilt Law Review, and holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, with distinction, from the University of Alberta (2002). He is admitted to practice in California, Washington, and the District of Columbia, and is registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
