Clark S. Bakewell

Clark S. Bakewell is a Partner in the Intellectual Property practice at Mayer Brown, where he was promoted to that role effective January 1, 2026. He focuses primarily on electronics-related patent litigation before the International Trade Commission (ITC), the USPTO, and US district courts. His experience spans patents related to electronic devices, software, user interfaces, and wireless communications, with a particular emphasis on standard-essential patents (SEPs). Bakewell also possesses a background in physics and maintains a keen interest in quantum technologies, including sensing, communication, and computing, actively participating in the Quantum Economic Development Consortium (QED-C).

Bakewell demonstrates a versatile practice, handling patent litigation for both plaintiffs and defendants. His tracked appearances reflect this balance, with three cases on the plaintiff side and two on the defendant side. Notably, he was part of the Mayer Brown team that secured a significant trial victory for Pantech Corporation against OnePlus Technology (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd. in the Eastern District of Texas in March 2024. In this case, the jury found willful infringement of five of Pantech's wireless communication and user interface patents, awarding substantial damages. Other notable outcomes include settling a standard-essential wireless communication patent case for the patentee Pantech against Coolpad Group Limited on favorable terms, and achieving a favorable settlement for Maxell, Ltd. against Apple Inc. in a case involving image processing, GPS, and battery-saver technologies.

His practice also encompasses significant experience before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) and in ITC investigations. He led the effort to invalidate a design patent at the PTAB in Man Wah Holdings Limited v. Raffel Systems, LLC, a decision upheld by the Federal Circuit in 2022. He also successfully persuaded the PTAB not to institute inter partes review in cases such as ZTE Corp. v. Maxell, Ltd. and Huawei Device Co. v. Maxell, Ltd. Bakewell contributed to a publication discussing the interplay between Section 337 investigations and IPR proceedings, underscoring his expertise in these complex areas.

Clark S. Bakewell earned his B.S. in Physics and History from Georgetown University and his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Maryland, and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.
